The New York Jets shocked the heavily favored Baltimore Colts 16-7 in Super Bowl III at the Orange Bowl, delivering the AFL its first Super Bowl win and one of the sport's defining upsets. Joe Namath backed up his famous guarantee by calmly directing the offense while New York controlled the game for three quarters and kept Baltimore out of the end zone until late in the fourth. Matt Snell scored the Jets' lone touchdown, Jim Turner added three field goals, and Namath earned MVP honors for the victory that helped validate the merger era.
